Weather:
Mid fifties during the day, in the teens over-night.  Clear and breezy.
Plans:
Do a site map of the garden.  Post it on the web.
Activities:
  • Completely cleared out the vegetable garden
  • Cleaned tools and put them away
  • Cleaned and stored away garden trellises
  • Put the outdoor sink away
  • Moved the tender herbs into the green house, watered them.
Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:
I got the lilies I ordered.  Need to get those planted along with the garlic.  Still need to cut back the flowers out by the barn.

I think that I am in pretty good shape going into the fall.  I filled all my water jugs so that at least for the first part of the winter I will have water for the herbs.

Can’t wait until spring so I can start again.

Weather:
We are having an Indian Summer the temperatures have been above average most of September.  We have had a couple days of rain but otherwise the weather has been great.
Plans:
  • We are going to spread some grass seed today.  Also, I need to start to clean the vegetable garden.  The string beans, zucchini, and basil are finished.  I need to trim the strawberries back.
  • I have finished the trellis for the cucumber for next season.  I still need to figure out where I am going to plant the garlic.  I also have some scallion seeds to plant (winter over).
Activities:
  • The spinach is doing well and needs to be picked, the snap peas are coming along and I think that I will get a small harvest of them in the next few days.
  • I have cleared the middle section of the driveway as you approach the house (see picture).
  • Today my outside jobs are grass seed, gather more shingles (from the barn roof) for Richard to make kindling and start to clean up the vegetable garden.
  • I weed whacked the undeveloped areas of the vegetable garden.  Cleaned up the string beans and put the trellis away.
Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:
The yard and garden are looking pretty good.  Richard has done a lot of work in back clearing dead wood and cutting down some of the trees to clear the area.  This last week Richard has been working on the chokecherry trees along the driveway.

Weather:
It started raining last night, looks like we are going to have rain for the rest of the day. The forecast is for cooler weather, fall is on it’s way.
Plans:
I am working on building a trellis for cucumbers.  I have a tire that I will use to plant them in, Richard has built a box for it.
Activities:
I cleaned up the area between the driveway that goes to the workshop and barn.  I don’t know what I’ll plant in there but by Spring I should have something in mind.
Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:
We bought 25# of grass seed this weekend.  Richard is on vacation this coming week and with the rain today it might be a good time to put down some seed.

Weather:

High 80’s cooling off nicely in the evening.  I think that this has been the coolest July we have had since we have moved here.

Plantings:

I am taking a chance here and planting a fall crop of:

  • Spinach
  • Snap Peas
  • Beets

I hope the that weather will hold through September so that I will be able harvest this late crop. Next year I will be able to gage better when to plant the second season.

Activities:

Picked strawberries sliced them and will eat them for lunch during the week.  Picked zucchini and butternut squash; sliced and froze them using my foodsaver.   Cut back the herbs, they were getting pretty big.  I pulled the beets today, cleaned and boiled them I will freeze these as Richard likes beets, I don’t.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

The tomatoes are coming along very well.  I would think in the next week or so I will have cherry tomatoes.  The beefstakes will take a little longer.

The zucchini and butternut squash are producing very well I think that I will have to start giving it away soon cause I can’t keep up with it.
