Weather:

This week has been very nice weather wise.  Yesterday, Saturday was glorious, 76 and sunny. Today is another story 62 with rain.

Plantings:

Earlier this week (5/10/07) I started seed for:

Nasturtium

Sunflower Cyclops Hybrid - these have sprouted

Sunflower Mammoth - these have sprouted

Black-eyed Susan

On Saturday (5/12/07) I planted the last of the potatoes:

Russet Burbank

Yellow Finn

That makes 7 varieties of potatoes.  We’ll see how this goes this year.

Activities:

P5130020I tilled the area for my corn, just waiting to see when will be a good time to plant.  I am watching the 15 day forecast and I think I will go ahead and plant next weekend. The corn takes 92 days and I want corn before fall.

P5130018 I filled the new 4×4 box and have placed my six   cucumbers there. I rigged up a cover for them and will let them sit for a few days before I plant them.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

Mowed the front lawn.  I am working on a little project for the hens, once I get it done I’ll post a picture.

Weather:

We have had a little rain the past week not much.  Days are still fairly nice, nights still a little cool.

Plantings:

Planted Garlic - Early Italian - two gloves which is about 20 plants.

Planted potatoes- I thought I had gotten smarter this year, by making a diagram of what potatoes I planted in each tire.  After I planted four tires I realized I didn’t keep track of how many I planted. Anyway, this weekend I planted:

Russet Norkotah
French Fingerling

Red LaSoda

Red Pontiac

Russian Banana

Spinach - Sowed Direct (36)

Planted Tri-Star Strawberries (appox. 50)

Activities:

Richard finished the fence by completing the gate.  I also recruited him to help me fill my 12×4 box with dirt for the strawberries.  On Saturday we also purchased wood chips and I spent most of the day putting down wood chips and making temporary borders for my corn field.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

I moved my tires for the potatoes to the back of the garden because they are so unsightly.  I left them on grass because at the end of the season when you harvest the potatoes I figured if the soil got on the grass (most weeds) it wouldn’t hurt.

Weather:

The weather is remaining warm, we have some days in the 70’s otherwise the 60’s. Nights are still cool, with a couple of frosty mornings.

Plantings:

No plantings this weekend, although I did move my herbs out of the large 12×4 raised bed to a smaller 4×2 box that I had used for green onions last year. They managed to survive the winter so I thought if I moved them to the smaller box, I could protect better in this smaller area.

I planted my beets seeds after letting them soak for two days.(4/24/07).

Activities:

Richard and I continued working on the fence.  We have got the wire up around the whole area.  Richard needs to build a gate and it will be all done. I did weed around the flower bed off the back deck.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

So far all of the seedlings I have started have come up fairly well.  The only disappointment was the zucchini, only one of them sprouted. I have been moving them into small pots. After I put the chickens in the coop in the evening I have been going up to my “greenhouse” and turning on the heater.  Each morning, after letting the chicken out of the coop, I go up and turn off the heater and leave the door open if it is going to be sunny and warm.

Weather:

The weather continues with mild days and cool nights.

Plantings:

None- soaked beets seeds for planting.

Activities:

Richard and I started building the new improved fence around the vegetable garden.  The old fence was something that I built a couple of years ago.  When I decided to expand to the second garden plot we decided to rip down my old fence and build a new one that would enclose both plots.

Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:

This weekend I bought my new Scion tc.  That took up most of the weekend.
