Note to the reader: I am trying to keep a journal of what I did in my vegetable garden by date. Unfortunately, I am sometimes behind in my journaling. So the dates of the post may not exactly match the day of the actual post. Sorry…
Weather:
The past week brought some 60 degree weather along with snow flurries, rain, and hail. The forecast for this week is mid 50’s with a shower here and there.
Plantings:
I decided to be brave and direct sow seeds on Sunday. I planted:
Spinach - Giant 157 Hybrid, 40 seeds - 50 days -this spinach has nice broad leaves and I did have some success with it last year.
Radish - French Breakfast - 16 seeds
Lettuce - Black Simpson Elite - 12 seeds
Seedling started:
Peppers - Red Delicious Hybrid, 3 seeds - 60 days give you green pepper and 80 days give you red peppers.
Peppers - Jalapeno, 3 seeds - 75 days gives you nice hot peppers.
Pumpkin - Jack-O’-Lantern, 4 seeds - 110 days - maybe I’ll have pumpkins to crave this year.
Seed that are being pre-soaked:
Super Sugar Snap and Oregon Sugar Pod
Activities:
Richard has built me two more raised bed boxes. One is 4×12, the other is 4×4. The 4×12 box will house my new strawberry plants. The 4×4 I am not sure where I will place that box.
I also took my potato seeds out to the barn and am letting them sprout some before I plant them. (see note below)
Miscellaneous Notes & Observations:
I did not have a lot of success starting my tomato seeds in the greenhouse the temperatures were just too wild. The night time to temperature was about 59° but we had a couple of daytime temperatures of 60° which warmed the greenhouse up to about 90°, the heat mat was getting up around 100-110° which just fried my seeds. So, I moved my seed starting venture out to the barn in the room where I have raised my chicks. It has a heater and is not effected by the sun as much as the greenhouse is.
