Eighth Asparagus
Filed Under Journal | Leave a Comment
I noticed this evening that the eighth asparagus plant has emerged. I was pretty pleased about that. And I thought that they were a lost cause. I guess my next step is to figure out what to do with them over the winter.
I fertilized my strawberries last night, cause I read somewhere that this is the time to do that. I have lost two of them and may lose another before it’s all over. They seem to be growing well and some of the plants have sent out runners. I was thinking that maybe I would winter them over with some of the pine shavings from the chicken coop haven’t decided if that is a good idea or not.
From my list on Thursday, I did get three things done. I planted spinach, I cleaned the coop and cleaned up all the weeds I have pulled from the strawberries, raspberries and asparagus.
The coop still needs to be hosed out and winterized but I can do that next weekend. I ordered 25 more chicks on Saturday for delivery the week of August 8th.
This evening I planted the pholx and Serberian Iris I bought a while ago. I still need to plant the columbine that I bought.
That is it for this evening.

It has been hot all week. I have watered the vegetables and flowers on a rotating schedule all week. It has been to warm in the evenings when I get home from work to do anything but water.
As the weekend begins to become the reality my mental list of the things I need to get done grows, in addition to those little household chores of cleaning and laundry comes the following:
- Plant spinach seeds
- Clean up the weeds I have pulled
- Clean up the small chicken coop
- Plant the flowers I purchased at least two weeks ago
- Clean out the feed store room
- etc….
The list goes on, but that is enough for now.

In the garden
Filed Under Journal, Vegetable Garden | Leave a Comment
I pulled all of my green onions yesterday and planted a new crop. I also planted a second crop of Snap Peas.
I put the 4th tire on the potatoes today. I sure hopes this works. If it does I have two more tires that I placed getting me a total of 6 tire beds. I have been thinking of using some more tires in the other plot next year. So maybe one of these weekends I’ll take the truck down to the local tire store and see what I can round up.
The chickens are doing well and I will probably start to see eggs again in September. They will be six months old the end of September.

It’s warm out there….

We went down to Big R this afternoon to get me another hose to use in the front yard. On the way back we took a back road rather than the highway. What really interested me was the number of vegetable gardens I saw and the size of them. They were a lot bigger than mine. They were row gardens, not raised beds like mine and they were big, not real big but big enough.
We have been having temperatures in the 90’s, yesterday and today were 101. I have been keeping things well watered. And everything seems to be doing well.
I did notice something interesting, the asparagus that I planted in April is showing signs of life. After the May/June rains the weeds in that part of the garden just got out of control. I have spent alot of time weeding the strawberries. The raspberries have faired better because I dug out the old ones and planted new ones so the bed was in pretty good shape to begin with. Anyway, I have 7 of the 10 Asparagus growing. I have been weeding and watering them since this discovery and hopefully they will survive.
